Die Grundlage der preußischen Monarchie bildet die Mark Brandenburg, die Friedrich von Zollern 1415 zugleich mit der Kurwürde zu Lehen erhielt. Friedrich III. (1688-1713) erklärte sich 1701 als Friedrich I. zum König und vergrößerte Preußen durch einige kleinere Erwerbungen. Friedrich Wilhelm I. Wilhelm I. berief zur Durchführung der Heeresorganisation Otto von Bismarck an die Spitze eines konservativen Ministeriums. Preußen führte 1864 gemeinsam mit Österreich den Dänischen Krieg. Da sich aber die beiden deutschen Großmächte über das Schicksal Schleswig-Holsteins nicht verständigen konnten, brach 1866 der Deutsche Krieg aus, durch den Preußen Hannover, Kurhessen, Nassau, Frankfurt am Main und Schleswig-Holstein annektierte.
Der Machtzuwachs Preußens führte zum Deutsch-Französischen Krieg von 1870/71. Nach dem Sieg erfolgte die Proklamation König Wilhelm I. im Spiegelsaal des Schlosses von Versailles zum Deutschen Kaiser.

Major General Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defence announced that the last group of 531 Ukrainian troops have surrendered. The statement comes after Lieutenant Colonel Denys Prokopenko, the Ukrainian commander of the Azov Regiment, had earlier given the order to cease defending Mariupol city. He had also released a short video message from inside the Azovstal steel plant, asserting that the top military leadership of the war-torn nation had issued an order to preserve the garrison soldiers life and health and stop defending the city.
