US Should Stop Provocations in South China Sea: FM Spokesman
The United States should stop provocations in the South China Sea, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said in Beijing on Friday.
China’s new sanctions against American defence companies have the potential to cause major damage to the US military
By Tom Fowdy, a British writer and analyst of politics and international relations with a primary focus on East Asia.
Beijing has fired a warning to the US over its arms sales to Taiwan with a new round of sanctions. The move is symbolic for now, but if China wants to get tough it really could hammer the supply chains of the impacted companies. On Monday afternoon, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Beijing would be placing sanctions on a number of US firms and linked individuals over arms sales to Taiwan, with Washington having approved a record sale worth around $5 billion to the island the previous week.
The listed companies included Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense and Raytheon, striking at the heart of what is often referred to as ‘America’s Military Industrial Complex’. However, what the specific measures mean, how they will be implemented and what their impact might be remains to be seen.
At first glance, these sanctions look symbolic; such military firms do not pursue business in China, and do not have market traction in America. One exception is Boeing’s civilian wing, which stated in an email it was still committed to the Chinese market.
On the other hand, this is not to say that such sanctions will not have strategic implications. First of all, China has an overwhelming dominance on the ‘rare earth’ materials required for US defence manufacturing, and should these sanctions really look to bite, they could have a major impact on the supply chain.
Secondly, even if the measures are only symbolic, it is nonetheless a warning shot from Beijing that it may retaliate further against US actions in the future.
What are ‘rare earths’? And why do they matter? The name refers to 17 elements which are used primarily in the manufacture of all kinds of items, including electronics, vehicles and of course military equipment.
Naturally, these resources form the bedrock of many supply chains around the world. China has a near total monopoly over this industry; a study found that the country “produced roughly 85 percent of the world’s rare earth oxides and approximately 90 percent of rare earth metals, alloys, and permanent magnets”. In 2018, up to 80 percent of America’s own rare earth imports came from China; Washington knows this and is scrambling for contingencies.
The strategic implications of this are quite clear; the US military relies deeply on materials imported from China to manufacture its equipment. If Beijing wanted, these sanctions could hammer the supply chains of the impacted firms. rt.com

Military cooperation between Israel and China
Chinese Embassy Tel Aviv
Haifa base commander Brig. Gen. Eli Sharvit welcomes RADM Yang Jun-Fei to Israel China and Israel have developed close strategic military links with each other. Bilateral military relations have evolved from an initial Chinese policy of secret non-official ties to a close strategic partnership with the modern and militarily powerful Israel.
Israel and China began extensive military cooperation as early as the 1980s, even though no formal diplomatic relations existed.
Israel has provided China with military assistance, expertise and technology. According to a report from the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission, "Israel ranks second only to Russia as a weapons system provider to China and as a conduit for sophisticated cutting edge military technology, followed by France and Germany."
Long before diplomatic relations were established in 1992 Israel had been selling arms to China. The use of military sales as a means of achieving foreign-policy goals was neither new nor unprecedented in Israeli foreign policy to promote its interests. Israel sold technology to upgrade Chinese tanks and planes in the 1980s. IAI Lavi and UAV technology seems to have been sold to China. Expertise in fitting western equipment in Soviet made hardware helped in modernization of Chinese army and air force, this way Chinese defense modernization complemented Israel's need of cash to fund its domestic made high-tech weapons programs.
Tiananmen events offered an additional incentive for military relationship, funded in Israel's reputation as reliable arms supplier. The sanctions imposed by the Western countries almost froze Chinese access to advanced military and dual-use technologies. Israel sought to benefit from this situation and become China's back door to western technology.
Israel was ready to sell China the Phalcon, an Israeli airborne early-warning radar system (AWACS), until the United States forced it to cancel the deal.[68] Some estimate that Israel sold arms worth US$4 billion to China in this period.[63][64]
China had looked to Israel for the arms and military technology it could not acquire from the United States, Europe and Russia.[18] Israel is now China's second-largest foreign supplier of arms after Russia with China having purchased a wide array of military equipment and technology, including communications satellites.[63] China is a vital market for Israel's aerospace and defense industry. Due to Israel's recognition of China, Israel has also limited its cooperation with Taiwan in order to foster closer ties with Mainland China.
The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency compiled evidence that Israel had transferred missile, laser and aircraft technology to China in the 1990s. On 19 October 1999, the Defense Minister of China, Chi Haotian, flew to Israel and met with Ehud Barak, then-Prime Minister and Defense Minister of Israel. They reached several high-level agreements, including a $1 billion Israeli-Russian sale of military aircraft to China.[69] On 25 May 2011, the Commander of the People's Liberation Army Navy, Admiral Wu Shengli, made an official visit to Israel, meeting with Barak and Rear Admiral Eliezer Marom.
On 14 August 2011, General Chen Bingde, Chief of the People's Liberation Army General Staff Department, made an official visit to Israel, scheduled for three days. He came a guest of the Israeli Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, who received him with an honor guard at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv.[73] The visit came after Defense Minister Ehud Barak's visit to China in June, the first visit of a defense minister to the country in a decade. Bingde's visit was part of a tour that included stops in Russia and Ukraine.
On 13 August 2012, vessels from the PLA Navy's 11th escort fleet, led by Rear Admiral Yang Jun-fei, anchored at Israel's Haifa naval base for a four-day goodwill visit to mark 20 years of cooperation between the Israel Defense Forces and the PLA. The vessels and crewmen were welcomed by the Haifa base commander, Brigadier General Eli Sharvit, and Chinese embassy officials.[74] In July 2018, 180 acres of the Northern port in Haifa were transferred to Shanghai International Port Group Co. (SIPG) for a 25-year period of management. This sparked a heated discussion in the Israeli press and the academy, as well as a special discussion by the Israeli cabinet. It also came up in discussions between US National Security Advisor John Bolton and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu when they met on January 7, 2019. However economically insignificant it may be for both China and the US, the Haifa port could become a critical battleground in a new Cold War between the two superpowers. (source:Wikipedia)

North Korea threatens to remilitarize DMZ | DW News
Western Propaganda
Relations between North and South Korea remain tense a day after Pyongyang threatened to restart military exercises in the demilitarized zone bordering South Korea. Citing the army, state media reported that troops would be sent to the industrial park in the border town of Kaesong and to the Kumgang Mountains on the east coast. Guard posts in the demilitarized buffer zone between the two countries will be reestablished, it added. Tensions on the Korean peninsula hit a new low Tuesday when Pyongyang blew up its joint liaison office with Seoul. Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, called out the South for making a "tactless and sinister proposal" in its offer to send an envoy, according to a statement reported by North Korean news agency KCNA. Up until a year ago, the two had been making steps towards a more peaceful co-existence - there's little sign of any of that now.

The US Navy has been frequently tasking warships into Chinese territorial waters in the South China Sea, and its Air Force has also been flying bombers, reconnaissance planes, drones and patrol aircraft in this area, but not publicizing it.
Chinese naval early warning and reconnaissance aircraft will not only spot US vessels and aircraft and inform Chinese warships and fighter jets to expel them, but also record US electromagnetic signals, a move that will give the Chinese military an edge so it can launch targeted jamming or attacks if necessary

The Chinese mainland's national security authorities' Thunder 2020 Crackdown has unearthed hundreds of espionage cases involving spies from Taiwan, Chinese national broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Sunday.
The activities included attempts to disrupt cross-Straits exchanges, sponsor Hong Kong separatists and instigate trouble in diplomatic ties between China and other countries.
The national security authorities carried out a Thunderbolt 2018 crackdown two years ago, which busted more than 100 espionage cases.
A CCTV program revealed the details of a case in which "Taiwan Independence" forces instigated a Taiwan resident to engage in espionage work and intervene in Hong Kong affairs.
At the end of August 2019, Taiwan resident and businessman Li Mengju was examined by the Shenzhen National Security Bureau when he left Shenzhen. Photos and videos related to a Chinese People's Armed Police Force assembly in Shenzhen and some anti-China or destabilizing Hong Kong propaganda flyers were found in his luggage and on his cellphones.
In addition to his status as a businessman, Li is also a director of the "Taiwan Independence" organization "Taiwan United Nations Association for the Advancement of Taiwan," according to a police officer from the National Security Department of Guangdong Province.
Connected to overseas anti-China politicians, the "Taiwan United Nations Association for the Advancement of Taiwan" has regularly organized visits all over the world by its members, who have clamored for Taiwan to join the United Nations and the World Health Organization.
According to Li's confession, in 2001, when he was studying in the United States, he often went to a place known as Taiwan Guild Hall in New York. He also knew many Taiwan green campers, such as Xiao Xihui, known as the "Taiwan independence magician."
"I'm sorry to refuse, so I took this opportunity to learn more about their thoughts. Whether it was imperceptible, I was drawn into this circle," Li said.
