Biden nannte keine weiteren Einzelheiten und machte nicht deutlich, ob er sich damit womöglich auf den Fall der versuchten Vergiftung des Kreml-Kritikers Alexander Nawalny bezog.

Moskau reagierte sofort und scharf auf Bidens Aussagen. "Putin ist unser Präsident und ein Angriff auf ihn ist ein Angriff auf unser Land", schrieb der Präsident des russischen Unterhauses, Wjatscheslaw Wolodin, im Onlinedienst Telegram. Der einflussreiche Putin-Vertraute fügte mit Blick auf die Biden-Äußerungen hinzu: "Das ist Hysterie aufgrund von Machtlosigkeit."

Erst am Dienstag hatten die US-Behörden einen neuen Bericht veröffentlicht, demzufolge sich Russland in die US-Präsidentschaftswahl 2020 eingemischt hat - und nicht nur in die Wahl 2016 zugunsten des inzwischen abgewählten Präsidenten Donald Trump. Biden nimmt seit seinem Amtsantritt im Januar eine deutlich härtere Haltung gegenüber Moskau ein als sein Vorgänger, dem eine übergroße Nähe zum Kreml-Chef vorgeworfen wird.

Biden sagte nun, er habe sich kurz nach seinem Amtsantritt im Januar mit Putin unterhalten. "Zu Beginn des Gesprächs sagte ich zu ihm: 'Ich kenne Sie und Sie kennen mich. Wenn ich zu dem Schluss komme, dass das passiert ist, dann machen Sie sich auf etwas gefasst'." Biden ging nicht näher darauf ein, ob er damit die Wahleinmischung meinte oder andere russische Vorgehensweisen, darunter den Fall Nawalny. Der US-Präsident bekräftigte jedoch, dass er mit Moskau "arbeiten" wolle, "wenn es in unserem gemeinsamen Interesse ist".

Die US-Ministerien für Heimatschutz und Justiz hatten zuvor mitgeteilt, Russland und der Iran hätten nach Erkenntnissen der US-Behörden die Wahl-Infrastruktur der US-Präsidentschaftswahl am 3. November angegriffen. Dabei sei es den Angreifern gelungen, die "Sicherheit mehrerer Netzwerke zu beeinträchtigen, die einige Wahlfunktionen verwalteten". Den ausländischen Akteuren sei es aber nicht gelungen, das Wahlergebnis zu beeinflussen.
Der russische Vize-Außenminister Sergej Riabkow bezeichnete den US-Bericht ebenfalls als "unbegründet". Er sagte der staatlichen Nachrichtenagentur Ria Nowosti, "feindliche Schritte gegen Russland" seien in Washington "Normalität" geworden.

Moskau wird vorgeworfen, sich in die US-Wahl 2016 eingemischt zu haben, um Donald Trump zum Sieg zu verhelfen. Nach dem Wahlsieg Bidens gratulierte Putin ihm als einer der letzten Staats- und Regierungschefs.

Putin was speaking on television after Biden, in an ABC News interview that prompted Russia to recall its Washington ambassador for consultations on Wednesday, said "I do" when asked if he believed the Russian president was a killer.
Biden also described Putin as having no soul, and said he would pay a price for alleged Russian meddling in the November 2020 U.S. presidential election, something the Kremlin denies.
